Tulane University (M.A. and LL.B.). He served in the Louisiana legislature
and was speaker of the Louisiana House. He was elected to the US
Senate November 3, 1936 and served 6 consecutive terms. In those

Senator Ellender climbed higher in the Congress than any other
Louisianian. He is the only Louisianian to ever serve 6 senate terms,
become president Pro Tempore, become Chairman of the Senate Agricultural
Committee or become Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committtee.
He
was praised by his constituents and colleagues as conscientious,
hard working, fair, honest and forceful. Associates marveled at
his health, his cooking and his vigorous work and exercise routine.
